Biology

Raichu, the evolved form of Pikachu, is a large orange mouse with a lightning bolt-shaped tail. Standing 2 feet 7 inches (79 cm) tall, it is significantly taller than Pikachu. Raichu is a bipedal rodent with long ears and feet but short arms.

It has orange skin, a white belly, brown paws, and tan-colored soles on its feet. Its bifurcated ears are brown on the outside and yellow on the inside, and the yellow sacs on its cheeks can generate large amounts of electricity. Its tail can be used as a lightning rod to gather electricity, or as a ground to protect itself.

It can store and eject up to 100,000 volts, enough to knock out a Copperajah. To avoid physically straining itself, it will discharge excess electricity into the ground, leaving its surroundings burned. Because it evolves via a stone and Pikachu is more popular, Raichu are rarely seen.

Design & origin

Created by Atsuko Nishida, Raichu was originally planned to evolve into a species dubbed Gorochu, which was cut due to cartridge space concerns. The species was modeled after squirrels rather than mice, as the mouse Pokémon Rattata already existed, and Nishida had the idea to have it store electricity in its cheeks similar to how squirrels store food; Satoshi Tajiri, however, changed it to a type of mouse.

Its name comes from "rai", meaning thunder, and "chū", the Japanese onomatopoeia for a mouse's squeak.

Alolan Raichu has a fluffier design with round ears and tail, meant to give it a "soft and fluffy" appearance, with bread as the motif behind the design. It is able to levitate by riding its tail like a surfboard, a theme chosen due to the large amount of water surrounding the region, and it has an affinity for pancakes.
