Biology

Known as the Barrier Pokémon, Mr. Mime are skilled mimes even from a young age, and love to pantomime. As they mature, they gain the ability to psychically generate invisible objects such as walls and other barriers, which they create by vibrating the air with their fingertips. If a Mr. Mime is interrupted or its audience is unimpressed, it will slap them with its broad hands.

Appearing as an anthropomorphic creature, it has a pink head with red cheeks and blue horns resembling hair, a round, white body with a red spot in the middle, light-pink arms and legs that are connected to its body by red spheres, white, five-fingered hands and blue feet that curl upward at the tips. Despite its name, there are female Mr. Mime.

Design & origin

Mr. Mime was originally called "Barrierd" in Japanese, and was renamed "Mr. Mime" by Nintendo of America based on its appearance as a mime. Translator Nob Ogasawara voiced concern about giving Pokémon gender-specific names; when Pokémon Gold and Silver introduced gendered Pokémon, both males and females of the species were called Mr. Mime. Game representations featured only three fingers on each hand until Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire.
