Biology

Starmie is a purple starfish-like Pokémon with ten arms; its body resembles two starfish overlapped, the second star on its back being semi-attached and able to spin around independently of the front star.

Unlike most Pokémon, Starmie does not have a face, instead having a red jewel core at its center, which resembles a cut precious stone and seems to shine with the seven colors of the rainbow when looked at from different angles, but usually shows up red more than any other color. The jewel starts blinking when it is injured.

It can emit electrical waves from its core powerful enough to reach the furthest parts of the universe, and at night it transmits radio waves into outer space. Starmie and its prior evolutionary stage, Staryu, are implied to be from outer space, and both are genderless. To move around, it lifts itself into the air and floats, although it has also been depicted walking.

Design & origin

Its design is speculated to be based on the sunflower sea star, due to their shared similarities in color and large amount of arms. Its jewel may be a reference to the Colour Timer from the Ultraman franchise, its blinking when injured being similar to how Colour Timers indicate their user is running out of energy; Mega Starmie is also believed to be inspired by Ultraman.

Together with Staryu, its name is believed to combine "Starfish" or "Star", "You", and "Me".

HoldsStarminite

Mega Starmie looks identical to Starmie, but grows two human-like legs, which it can use to run around. It also poses with its arms on its hips when standing.

It takes on this form due to attempting to resemble humans, though it is unclear if this is to replicate or to replace humanity.
