Biology

Sudowoodo mimics the appearance of a tree, standing still with its arms up. It features a primarily brown body, beady eyes and an antennae-like protrusion from its head, which is smaller for females compared to males. On the end of its arms are three green balls, which can vary in size.

It has strong limbs, allowing it to hold its arms up for long periods of time in order to mimic a tree. It likes to surround itself and blend in with real trees, rarely moving unless it believes people realize it is faking being a tree. It is afraid of rain and will flee when rain comes; when exposed to water, it will run or lash out.

It tends to stand in the middle of paths, blocking people trying to get past. Sudowoodo is popular with the elderly, similarly to how bonsai are popular with them, even having a magazine dedicated to it. Sudowoodo is the evolved form of Bonsly.

Design & origin

Ken Sugimori created its design unexpectedly whilst drawing various illustrations of characters, then asked a scenario writer to create a backstory about a Pokémon that blocks the player's path. It may be based on petrified wood. In English, "Sudowoodo" is a pun on "pseudo wood"; its Japanese name, Usokkī, comes from "uso" ("false") and "ki" ("tree" or "wood"), and is also taken from "Usotsuki" ("liar").

Its German name, Moglebaum, translates to "cheating tree," and its French name, Simularbre, to "acts like a tree."
