Biology

Standing 0.4 metres (1 ft 4 in) tall, Pikachu is a bipedal rodent with long ears and feet but short arms. It has yellow fur, long pointed ears that end in black tips, a striped pattern on its back, red cheek sacs which can generate large amounts of electricity, and a tail shaped after a lightning bolt.

It raises its tail to check its surroundings, but may be struck by a lightning bolt in this position. It gathers electricity from the atmosphere, and uses it to roast berries, communicate with other Electric-type Pokémon, and attack its opponents. Groups of Pikachu having their tails raised can inadvertently cause lightning storms.

Cramorant often swallow Pikachu by accident. It evolves into Raichu after it is exposed to a Thunder Stone, and its pre-evolution is Pichu.

Design & origin

Created by Atsuko Nishida, Pikachu was modeled after squirrels rather than mice or rabbits, with electricity stored in its cheeks similar to how squirrels store food, before it was changed to be a type of mouse. Its initially pudgier design was changed over time to have a slimmer waist, straighter spine, and more defined face and neck.

Its name combines two Japanese onomatopoeia: pika, a sparkling sound, and chū, a sound a mouse makes.

Forms

Gigantamax Pikachu

Electric
BST 320

Upon Gigantamaxing, Pikachu becomes much more pudgy (similar to its initial appearance during the early days of Generation I), and its tail grows longer to the point that it can use its tail like a lasso. It still retains the signature thunderbolt shape. Its signature G-Max Move is G-Max Volt Crash.
