Biology
Meowth is a sand-colored bipedal cat with a gold koban coin on its head. It withdraws its claws into its paws to sneak around without leaving footsteps. It loves round and shiny objects, coins being its favorite toys, which it will play with until it falls asleep.
It sleeps during the daytime, and patrols its territory during the night, looking for loose change. It tends to fight with Murkrow over shiny objects. Giving coins to a Meowth can make it friendlier, but no less fickle. It can evolve into Persian.
Design & origin
Meowth is based on the Japanese good luck charm maneki-neko. Its Japanese name, Nyarth, comes from a Japanese proverb about a cat unknowingly having money on its head, which is meant to impart the importance of money. Series creator Satoshi Tajiri stated there was no similar concept in the United States, and thus its name was changed to Meowth.
A pre-evolution with a five-yen coin on its head was planned for Pokémon Gold and Silver, but was cut before release.
Forms
Alolan Meowth has a similar design, except it has bigger ears, blue/grey fur, and a more relaxed disposition. Its disposition came from being a favorite Pokémon of royalty before becoming a wild Pokémon after the destruction of the royalty.
Galarian Meowth has grey iron fur, a beard, and sharp teeth. It evolves into Perrserker instead of Persian.
Gigantamax Meowth
When Gigantamaxed, the Kantonian Meowth's body will stretch drastically, causing it to grow to incredible heights and become very long. There is a kanji marking on Meowth's Amulet Coin, which translates to "large". Its signature G-Max Move is G-Max Gold Rush.
