Biology

Haunter is part of a three-stage evolutionary line consisting of Gastly, itself and Gengar. It is 5 feet 3 inches (160 cm) tall and appears as a dark purple levitating head with angled white eyes and a long pink mouth with sharp teeth. Spike protrusions extend from the sides and back of its head, while its limbs consist of two disembodied clawed hands that float in front of it.

Because of its ability to slip through walls, Haunter is said to be from another dimension. Its primary means of attack is its long, cold, gaseous tongue: it saps its victims' life by licking them, and those licked by it grow weaker with each passing day, shaking uncontrollably until they die.

If one trips and falls for no apparent reason or hears a sound when no one is around, it may be a Haunter. Because it fears the light and revels in the dark, it may be on the verge of extinction in cities that stay brightly lit at night. On moonless nights, Haunter searches for someone to curse.

Design & origin

Conceived as a group effort at Game Freak and finalized by Ken Sugimori, Haunter was called Ghost in Japan; its name was initially changed to Spectre for English-speaking audiences, before later being localized as Haunter. It was originally depicted with three fingers and a thumb on each hand, but the anime adaptation and later games depicted it with only two fingers and a thumb.
