Biology
Wobbuffet, the evolved form of Wynaut, is a blue, blob-like Pokémon with closed eyes, typically depicted holding its hand to its forehead. It also has a black tail with eyes on it, which it prefers to keep hidden. Female Wobbuffet have pink lips akin to lipstick.
It is a primarily reactive Pokémon, able to do damage only in reaction to being attacked. Wobbuffet are highly protective of their tails; when the tail is attacked, its normally docile disposition is replaced by ferocious aggression, said to be proof that the tail "hides a secret". If two Wobbuffet encounter each other, they become competitive and try to outdo the other in endurance, even to the point of starvation.
Design & origin
Designed by Hironobu Yoshida, Wobbuffet is likely based on punching bags and okiagari-koboshi dolls, and may also be based on rakugo comedian Sanpei Hayashiya I, sharing his quirk of holding a limb to its head like a salute. Its Japanese name, Sonans, is based on his catchphrase "sō nansu, okusan" ("That's the way it is, ma'am"), and Wynaut's Japanese name, Sohnano, meant to sound like "really?", serves as a response.
Its English name combines "wobble" and "buffet", a reference to its ability to handle taking multiple hits.
