Biology

Parasect is the evolved form of Paras. It has an orange body, with a large tōchūkasō mushroom having formed on its back. The mushroom has completely drained the Paras's body of its nutrients and taken it over, leaving Parasect fully controlled by the tōchūkasō.

Its eyes are blank and white, described as "zombie-like". The bug is mostly dead, so removing the mushroom causes it to stop moving entirely. It often can be found in dank areas hospitable to fungi growth.

Groups of Parasect will gather around a tree, suck the nutrients out of it, and move to the next tree when it dies. It is capable of releasing spores that create more mushrooms, and its spores can be made into medicine. Parasect in Alola are known to compete with Shiinotic, and have lower-quality spores.

Design & origin

The tōchūkasō is a parasitic mushroom that over time replaces the tissue of the host body and can affect the host's behavior. Other fungi, such as the genus Cordyceps, have also been noted as potential inspiration for Parasect's mushroom, which has been compared to Ophiocordyceps unilateralis, the "Zombie ant fungus", also found in cicadas. Its name is a combination of "parasite" and "insect".
