Biology

Biology · design and origin · 3 forms

An orange, dragon-like Pokémon, Charizard is the evolved form of Charmeleon and the final evolution of Charmander. Its fire is hot enough to melt boulders and glaciers, and it is known to start forest fires by accident, though it will not use it against weaker foes. The flame on its tail can burn underwater, and turns bluish-white if Charizard is angry.

Design & origin

Charizard was designed by Atsuko Nishida before Charmander, with Charmander being based on Charizard's design.

Whereas its pre-evolutions were ground-bound, with Charmander being salamander-like and Charmeleon being chameleon-like, Charizard's design is inspired by dragons, more specifically European dragons.

Originally called "Lizardon" in Japanese, it was renamed "Charizard" for western audiences, a portmanteau of the words "charcoal" or "char" and "lizard".

Gigantamax Charizard

When Gigantamaxed, Charizard grows significantly in size; its eyes and belly glow bright, and its wings become cloaked entirely in flames. The flame on the tip of its tail has also grown. Its signature G-Max Move is G-Max Wildfire.
