Biology
Butterfree is the evolved form of Metapod, an evolution of Caterpie. It is an insect-like Pokémon, resembling a butterfly. Its purple body features two segments, and its mouth, hands, and feet are blue.
It features red compound eyes, a pair of antennae, small white fangs, and white wings with a black pattern. Its wings are covered in poisonous, water-repelling powder, which it uses to defend itself and fly in the rain. It goes from flower to flower to collect nectar, and rubs honey onto the hairs of its legs to carry back to its nest.
It spreads its scales around to defend nearby Caterpie from predators. It competes with Cutiefly for territory.
Design & origin
Butterfree is based on a butterfly, while its previous forms are based on a caterpillar and chrysalis. Entomologist Rebecca M. Kittel argued that while it bore a resemblance to Aporia crataegi, it had teeth instead of a proboscis which members of that species of butterflies have, and that its two-segmented body differed from adult insects' three-segmented bodies.
Forms
Gigantamax Butterfree
In addition to becoming significantly larger, Gigantamax Butterfree gains larger wings, and has been compared to the kaiju Mothra. The edges of its wings become green, as do its antennae, with green scales flaking off as it floats in midair.
These scales can paralyze, poison, or lull its opponents to sleep. Its signature G-Max Move is G-Max Befuddle.
